The best Garden Route honeymoon is slower than you think. After months of wedding planning, the last thing you need is a road trip with a new bed every night. Base yourselves in one private place for three to five nights, explore a little, and spend most of the time together. Here's how to plan it.
Why choose one base, not five?
The Garden Route is long, and it's tempting to see all of it. Resist. Packing and unpacking every day turns a honeymoon into logistics. Wilderness makes an ideal base. It's about 15 km from George airport and about 47 km from Knysna, so everything is within reach for a day trip, and it's quieter than the bigger towns.
When should you go?
- December to March: The warmest months and the busiest. Book well ahead.
- April to May, and September to November: Quieter, mild and often the best value.
- June to August: Cooler and greener. Perfect if your idea of romance is a fire, a hot tub and nowhere to be.
What should honeymoon accommodation have?
- Total privacy. No shared spaces, no neighbours, no reception.
- A private hot tub. You'll use it every day.
- Somewhere to cook and eat outside. Some of your best honeymoon memories will be dinners you made together.
- A sense of occasion. A honeymoon deserves a bedroom that feels like one.
- An experience for two. Something that helps you connect beyond "what shall we do today?"
What does a simple honeymoon rhythm look like?
- Day 1: Arrive, unpack once, and do nothing.
- Day 2: Wilderness Beach in the morning, the Map of Africa viewpoint at sunset.
- Day 3: A forest walk on the Kingfisher trails, then a long lunch.
- Day 4: A slow day at the suite.
- Day 5: A day trip to Knysna, or stay in.
