How to Choose a Truly Romantic Getaway on the Garden Route

By Jason Swanepoel, Experience Suites

The most romantic Garden Route getaway isn't the one with the biggest room or the best view. It's the one where, for two or three nights, nobody else exists. That comes down to three things: privacy, a setting that pulls you outdoors, and a stay designed for two people rather than for anyone who happens to book.

What makes a getaway truly romantic?

Most accommodation is built to suit everyone: families, business travellers, groups. Romance needs the opposite. Here's what to look for.

  • Real privacy. No shared pool, no neighbours on the next balcony, no reception desk. You should be able to sit outside in a robe without a second thought.
  • Your own hot tub or outdoor bath. It's the single feature couples mention most in reviews, and the one that turns a cold evening into the best part of the trip.
  • Fire. A boma or fire deck gives every evening a natural centre: wine, a braai, and long conversations.
  • Design that feels intentional. Lighting you can soften, textures you want to touch, a bedroom that feels like an occasion rather than a hotel room.
  • Something to do together. The best couples' stays give you a reason to connect, not just a place to sleep.

Why is Wilderness the heart of the Garden Route for couples?

Wilderness sits between George and Knysna, about 15 km from George airport, which makes it easy to reach for a short escape. Within a few minutes you have:

  • Wilderness Beach, a long, wide stretch of sand that's rarely crowded.
  • The Map of Africa viewpoint, where the Kaaimans River curves into the shape of the continent. Tandem paragliders launch from here towards the ocean.
  • The Kingfisher trails in the Wilderness section of the Garden Route National Park, with forest walks, waterfalls and canoeing on the river.
  • Victoria Bay, a small swimming cove about ten minutes away.

You can fill a day, or do nothing at all. On a romantic getaway, the second option is usually the better one.

Where should you stay? Naughty by Nature

Naughty by Nature is our flagship Experience Suite in Wilderness, created for couples and nobody else. It's private and secluded, with:

  • A private hot tub, an outdoor kitchen, a boma and a fire deck, for your use only
  • A themed interior with a four-poster bed, layered lighting and a full kitchen
  • A guided couples' experience that begins before you arrive and runs through your stay

Rates follow the season: R5,500 a night for the spring special, R6,500 in December and January, and R6,000 from February. It books up early, with bookings already running into August 2027, so plan ahead for weekends and holidays.

How do you plan it?

  1. Pick your dates first. Popular weekends, Valentine's Day and December go early.
  2. Stay at least two nights. The first night you arrive; the second night you actually relax.
  3. Plan one outing, not five. A morning walk or an hour on the beach, then back to the suite.
  4. Leave the rest open. The suite is the destination.

Part of every stay: the guided couples’ experience.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most romantic area on the Garden Route?

Wilderness is one of the most romantic bases on the Garden Route: lakes, forest, a long quiet beach and the Map of Africa viewpoint, all within a short drive, and only about 15 km from George airport.

What should a couples' getaway on the Garden Route include?

Look for real privacy (no shared spaces or neighbours looking in), a private hot tub or outdoor bath, a fire for the evenings, and something designed for the two of you to do together.

When is the best time for a romantic Garden Route getaway?

The Garden Route is beautiful year-round. Spring and autumn are quieter, while December and January are the busiest, so book those months well ahead.
